How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?

Taking care of long hair requires a lot more time and maintenance than shorter hair. So, if you guys develop proper hair hygiene techniques early on (like conditioning and occasional trims), you will have healthy, good-looking hair.

So, how often should you wash your hair? Well, everyone’s hair and scalp is different; some people may require washing more, or less, depending on the individual.

Try to avoid washing your hair everyday; this will strip away the natural oils that your hair needs. This can cause your hair to dry up and potentially fall out. Note that hair products like shampoos are packed with chemicals, which can actually harm hair, causing damage or breakage.

You should wash your hair every 2-3 days, or even less often (less is more when it comes to washing hair). Also remember that its okay to go without washing it, just as long as it doesn’t look dirty or smell bad.

That being said, some people have hair that gets dirty or greasy very easily and will call for a hair washing daily. Others might find washing less often works better. It’s important to experiment and find what works best for you. Just remember to keep in mind that the less you wash, the healthier your hair will be.

How often do you wash your hair?

  1. Based on my limited experience, I tend to agree that the less you *shampoo* your hair, the better it looks. Hair is not meant to be shampooed very often, if at all – those chemicals wreak havoc on your natural oil production. The reason I emphasize *shampoo* is because everyone should at least vigorously rinse their hair daily to get rid of actual dirt and grime.

Having said that, I think that there is a spectrum; the thicker and/or wavier your hair is, the less often you should shampoo. Assuming you have thin, fine, straight hair, I’d say shampoo more often than if you have wavy, thick, coarse hair.

Of course, all it takes is experimentation!

    • exactly, experimentation is very important! i have also read a lot about people who wash their hair with only water. this seems like a great and healthier alternative, no? i’ll be sure to write an article about this as soon as I do some extensive research.

  2. im going on 6 months without using shampoo or conditioner, my hair has never looked better, not joking

    • very interesting, i’ve heard this from others as well. i might have to give it a shot.

  3. what if you use product? i’ve been going without shampoo for 3 months now and its great, but recently i’ve been using wax in my hair. should i be using shampoo to wash it out? its a cheap wax.

    • i probably would, but i guess it all depends on how you feel, if it smells, etc…

  4. The bad thing about my hair is dandruff… I can deal with 1 day max, more than like a pile of dirt in my head 🙁

    • Yeah dandruff totally sucks. Try hydrating by drinking more water. Also I heard apple cider vinegar, and tea tree oil helps.

  5. I have long semi curly hair. Living out in the country and the implications of that life style, I wash my hair everyday. I have skipped shampooing my hair some days and noticed that my hair looks healthier. Will probably stop washing daily.

    • Thanks for your comment Marco! I too have found my hair looking & feeling healthier on my non-wash days. I’ve noticed that in the summer I have to wash it everyday (due to sweat and humidity), and that I wash every other day during the colder winter months.

  6. apple cider vinegar works great. I haven’t used shampoo in months. I wash it with ACV once a week.

  7. I usually wash my hair 2-3 days, but lately it’s been getting dry and very fluffy. I started washing my hair every 5-6 days, and the situation discontinued, but was still very fluffy when I washed it. I am now on a week and a half without washing my hair, and it’s never looked better, nor felt better. I have plans to wash it when it gets the slightest hint of smell.
